Maharashtra, the third-largest state in India in terms of area, boasts the country’s most extensive road network, making it a treasure trove of diverse landscapes, from captivating beaches to enchanting hill stations. Suppose you’re a resident of Maharashtra and plan to take your private vehicle on the state’s roads. In that case, it’s vital to understand your liability for paying Maharashtra Road Tax, as per the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Act of 1958.

By fulfilling your road tax obligations in Maharashtra, you secure the freedom to traverse the state’s roads for 15 years. In Maharashtra, road tax rates vary for two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and commercial vehicles, contingent on a range of factors. The payment of a one-time road tax at the time of vehicle purchase plays a crucial role in assisting the state government in covering the expenses associated with road maintenance and infrastructural development.

Typically, the responsibility for collecting road tax falls under the jurisdiction of the state Road Transport Corporation or Road Transport Authority. Alternatively, individuals can visit their local state Regional Transport Office (RTO) to settle their road tax dues. Maharashtra boasts a total of 55 RTOs, each engaged in various vehicle-related services, including driver’s license issuance, registration certificate (RC) issuance, assignment of RTO codes to vehicles post-registration, license/RC renewals, and more.
