New Maruti Compact MPV: Hybrid Technology Promises 35+ Kmpl Mileage

The compact MPV from Maruti Suzuki, internally referred to as YDB, is expected to come with a proprietary hybrid system, set to debut in the Fronx facelift in 2025. Maruti Suzuki is currently developing a range of new models for launch over the next three to four years. In 2024, the company plans to unveil the new generation Swift, followed by the introduction of the all-new Dzire later in the year.

Furthermore, the highly anticipated global debut of the eVX is expected in late 2024. This electric SUV will be the brand’s first entry into the electric vehicle segment and will be built on the YY8 skateboard platform, derived from Toyota’s global 27PL architecture. This platform will also underpin a Toyota counterpart, with the launch of the seven-seater version of the Grand Vitara, known internally as the Y17, slated for 2025.

micro SUV

In addition to plans for a micro SUV and a zero-emission MPV, both based on the same platform as the eVX, Maruti Suzuki is also working on a sub-four-metre MPV to compete with the Renault Kiger. This model will draw inspiration from the Suzuki Spacia sold in Japan and is likely to feature the upcoming HEV system.

The hybrid system, developed in-house by Maruti Suzuki, will feature high local content. The Fronx facelift is expected to be the first model to use this technology in 2025, followed by four more models, including the next-generation Baleno and fifth-gen Swift. Unlike the strong hybrid system found in the Grand Vitara and Hyryder, this powertrain will function as a generator, similar to Nissan’s e-Power technology.

Grand Vitara

The Z-series 1.2L three-cylinder petrol engine, debuting in the new Swift this year, will work in tandem with an electric motor and a battery pack to form the HEV system, reportedly delivering a claimed fuel efficiency of over 35 kmpl.

The upcoming seven-seater compact MPV, codenamed YDB, could potentially be named the Spacia and is expected to slot below the Ertiga. There is a possibility of the YDB being available at Nexa dealerships as well, although its launch is not imminent.
