The road tax framework in West Bengal operates under the governance of the Motor Vehicle Taxation Act 1924, alongside the associated Rules and Collection of Tax. Road tax is a legally mandated fee imposed on vehicles traversing the roads of West Bengal. The revenue generated through this road tax plays a pivotal role in supporting the state’s transportation infrastructure, enabling the maintenance and enhancement of its road networks and related amenities.
Notably, one of the primary functions of the RTO is the allocation of unique RTO codes to various geographical regions within West Bengal. The state accommodates over 95 RTOs, collectively contributing to maintaining an extensive vehicle database.
