Chandigarh, renowned as India’s first meticulously planned city, boasts a network of well-maintained roads. However, to ensure the continual upkeep of these roadways, the UT Transport Department imposes road tax on vehicles utilizing Chandigarh’s thoroughfares. This road tax is a one-time legal requirement aimed at sustaining and enhancing the nation’s road infrastructure.
Effective July 11, 2023, the Chandigarh Transport Department has implemented an increase in the road tax rates for both two-wheelers (up to 8%) and four-wheelers (up to 10%). The revenue generated from this road tax will be earmarked for the maintenance and advancement of the transportation infrastructure within the Union Territory.
The Regional Transport Office, commonly referred to as Chandigarh RTO, serves as the central administrative body responsible for a myriad of vehicle-related activities. These include the issuance of registration certificates (RC), driver’s licenses, renewals, vehicle permits, pollution control, and the enforcement of road safety protocols. Notably, one of the critical functions of Chandigarh RTO is the allocation of unique RTO codes to distinct geographical regions within the Union Territory. Chandigarh hosts over 6 RTOs, collectively facilitating the maintenance of a comprehensive vehicle database.
