The city is regarded as the very first and one of the cities that are most planned in India; Chandigarh has well-maintained roads. However, in order to ensure the standard of these roads, it is necessary that Chandigarh’s UT Transport Department levies road tax on vehicles that travel through the streets of Chandigarh. Road tax is mostly a one-time fee that is required by law to ensure road infrastructure on Indian roads.

From 11 July 2023, The Chandigarh Transport Department has increased the road tax that applies to two-wheelers (up to 8 per cent) or 4 wheelers (up to 10 10%). The revenue-generating form of road tax is used to sustain and improve UT roads and transportation facilities.

The Regional Transport Office, or Chandigarh RTOs, administers all aspects of vehicle-related activities, including the issuance of certificate of registration (RC) drivers’ licenses, renewals, vehicle permits, regulating pollution and the application of road safety procedures. One of the main tasks of the Chandigarh RTO is to assign specific RTO codes to the various geographical regions of the Union Territory. There are six RTOs in Chandigarh, which aid in maintaining an inventory of vehicles within the state.
